I think it was 1927 when the American economy passed the British as number one. Did the Brits ever take it back? Are they going too?

Toyota’s move to Plano puts Texas on automakers’ maps

Six short days ago, Texas lived on the outskirts of the auto industry, a dusty outpost with two factories and giant ambitions.

Toyota changed that overnight, transforming Texas with a surprising announcement last Monday that it would move its U.S. headquarters from Southern California to Plano, along with 4,000 people.

It gave the state instant credibility in the car world, industry experts say — and at an opportune time.

As Mexico continues to crank out record numbers of vehicles for the U.S., automakers may see Texas as the ideal place for the divisions or offices that oversee that rising production.

“This puts Texas in a whole different light, and with all the new plants going into Mexico, everyone will be watching Toyota’s transition,” said Larry Dominique, an executive vice president at TrueCar.com who worked in the auto industry for 28 years.

“Toyota put Texas on the industry map,”

Pro-Russian protesters storm police headquarters in Ukrainian city
Hundreds of pro-Russian demonstrators stormed police headquarters in Odessa on Sunday and won the release of 67 people detained, days after deadly clashes left 42 dead in the Ukrainian port city.

The release came hours after Ukraine’s interim Prime Minister accused Russia and anti-government protesters of orchestrating a “real war” to threaten Ukraine’s sovereignty.

Arseniy Yatsenyuk told the BBC that the Kiev government would allow a "full, comprehensive, and independent investigation" into Friday's clashes in the Black Sea port. The violence began with street fighting between two sides in which at least three people were reported killed by gunfire, then turned into a grisly conflagration when government opponents took refuge in a building that caught fire after pro-Kiev protesters threw firebombs inside.

Dear Americans, Your Hashtags Won't #BringBackOurGirls;

imple question. Are you Nigerian? Do you have constitutional rights accorded to Nigerians to participate in their democratic process? If not, I have news for you. You can't do anything about the girls missing in Nigeria. You can't. Your insistence on urging American power, specifically American military power, to address this issue will ultimately hurt the people of Nigeria.

It heartens me that you've taken up the mantle of spreading "awareness" about the 200+ girls who were abducted from their school in Chibok; it heartens me that you've heard the cries of mothers and fathers who go yet another day without their child. It's nice that you care.

Here's the thing though. When you pressure Western powers, particularly the American government, to get involved in African affairs, and when you champion military intervention, you become part of a much larger problem. You become a complicit participant in a military expansionist agenda on the continent of Africa. This is not good.
You Might Actually Be Making Things Worse

May 9 was Victory Day in Ukraine, but there was nothing to celebrate in Mariupol where people were killed in clashes between pro-Russians and pro-Ukrainians. As of Saturday morning, the important port city is under the control of the pro-Russian forces.

Ukrainian rebels hold 'self-rule' vote
Pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine are going ahead with scheduled "self-rule" referendums in two regions, inviting further condemnation from the Kiev government and its Western allies, while Ukrainian national guardsmen opened fire at a crowd in one city.

Polls opened at 8 a.m. local time (1 a.m. EDT) in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions and were scheduled to close at 10 p.m. (3 p.m. EDT). A pro-Russian election official in Donetsk described the turnout to Fox News as "colossal."

"What do you expect," he asked, "when people are shooting at us?"

Sounds about right. They will fire on their own unarmed civilians but won't take up arms againt Russian forces. Path of least resistance I suppose.
