Notes: There were expectations of a low car count in the Outlaw Pro Mod class heading into the race. Last month there were only seven Pro Mods competing at PRP and four of them were definitely not coming this weekend. Kevin Bealko and Chip Forman were both running the ADRL race in Virginia, John Camp’s car isn’t repaired yet from his mishap last month and the **** Lockwood car that Pat Moore drives wasn’t expected because of previous non-racing commitments for several team members. But mark Malcuit showed up as did Andy Jensen for one of his few outings this season, Ron Solyan brought The Animal along with Dan Ferguson’s Firebird, and PRP regulars Tony Fagnilli Dave Trapletti and Tony Desiderato helped fill up the field.
Tony Desiderato was driving a new-to-him Rick Jones built 2009 Ford Mustang that was formerly driven in Pro Stock by Doug Kirk. Tony also intends to run the car in Pro Stock. He broke a transmission in qualifying and had to sit out eliminations.
Jim Kulbrick also had to sit out eliminations. Ron Solyan’s “The Animal” Nova burned a piston in the second qualifier. Ron showed me the spark plug; it not only burned the end off but had burned through part of the hex portion of the plug.
Don’t doubt John Vergotz commitment to the Asphalt Wars races. After experiencing some electrical issues at Thompson last week he sent the car to Jerry Bickel’s for repair. Two of his crew guys, Mike Stabline and Kevin Humphries took the car to St. Louis and then straight to Pittsburgh for this race.
Mike DiDomenico is now four-for-four in Asphalt Wars action in 2012 and, as is typical of a winning streak in drag racing, not every run Mike makes is stellar, but they all end with the win light shining in his lane. Mike shook and spun in the final round of Outlaw Dragster but it didn’t matter as Paul Molnar left just a bit too soon and lit the red light. It was the third race in a row that DiDomenico didn’t make a full pass in the final, but he won them all.
Buzz McElwee said he changed a bunch of stuff on the Powershield Coatings car and it showed in the performance as the car got quicker every round. 3.95 and 3.94 in qualifying and a pair of 3.88’s in eliminations left the team in high spirits after the race.
Paul Molnar and Dave Quisenberry strung together five wins in Asphalt Wars action last season. This year they have yet to hit the winner’s circle but they had to be pleased with the performance of the Absolute Machine Tools car at PRP. They broke in to the 3.7’s for the first time this season with a 3.77 in round one and a 3.78 in the semis.
