Hello All,

So yesterday at the track, my generator starts acting up. It was running really rough, the green power light wouldn't come on. Its pushing alot of pressure out the crankcase vent. So I am thinking after 13 years, figure it is finally kicking the bucket.

So I am checking things out, going through the manual and I come the spark arrestor and it recommended its cleaned every 100 hrs. I have never cleaned it in the 13 years that I have had it. Honestly I never knew about it. For those that don't know what this is, its basically a filter in the exhaust.

I pulled it out and here is what I found.

Pulled it out, and fired the generator up and its purring like a kitten.

Here is what it looked like after I cleaned it.

So add it to your maintenance list if you have one.

Thanks

So

Thank you! Power Tool Great info. I’ve only experienced the carb caking up from the new fuel. Cleaned passages with copper wire and good to go. Can’t just clean the bowl , it plugs idle and high speed..
Mines at least 8 years old.

Not using the generator in wooded areas I believe you could run without it. They require spark arrestors on dual purpose dirt bikes to keep from starting forest fires. They will carbon up also and kill power like that.

Great information. I have the eu2000i and reviewing the owners manual shows the same spark arrestor.

Were you able to re-use the old arrestor gasket?

HERE'S where you download the owners manuals.

I was able to reuse the gasket, no issues. I cleaned mine with a wire wheel. It it located on the exhausted pipe after the muffler. Pulled two screws to pull off the exhaust pipe, and use a screwdriver to pop the filter out.

I will have to look at removing it, see if it yields any performance improvements.

Be careful doing that it could throw off carb calibration and end up burning up your motor.

I just took mine out, never a problem. Also if you will look on ebay you can find the quick connect exhaust kit to make your generator NHRA legal. It was a bit expensive but it works like a champ.

Also, try some Lucas Ethanol Fuel additive and see if that doesn't stop your fuel problems. It certainly did for me. Good luck!

Thanks Banjo

Unfortunately I've been using my gen for powering the house instead of the trailer. Got to love the weather. My 3000 is close to 20 years old and has never been cleaned. Last week it was what I called hunting (surging). I'll check the exhaust first before looking at the carb.

Thanks again

Cool

For the surging thing, there is a fuel filter in the tank. I know mine would get clogged, and the generator would surge and cutout. really need to pull the tank and clean it out and replace the filter. But to get back going, I would pull the fuel line off the carb and blow compressed air though it. That would get me back going

Also check the oil level, it it's right on the line of just enough, as it runs, it will start slinging oil and trip the low oil sensor intermittently causing it to cut out.
