They usually break at the push rod end. Never seen that before.

Me thinks the rocker was the end of the train wreck not the beginning.

I suppose anything is possible, but this is what i was thinkin:

1. rocker breaks
2 broke rocker pushes on retainer
3 which pops the keepers
4 valve drops
5 valve inserts itself in piston

Its quite a mess though!!!!!!!!!

Yep.

The piston tagged the exhaust valve first which pushed the stem up and snapped the rocker.

I would venture to say that the either the valve spring was weak or broke and created this or the exhaust valve to piston clearance was not sufficiant.

So are you saying that it is not possible for a rocker to break period or just in this case that the rocker was not the 1st part to fail?

We broke too many of these rockers like mentioned in a previous post. Made the switch to T&D based on the deal but wish I would have been able to go with Curtis Built Rockers from Bill Curtis.

I looked up and down this topic and I still can't seem to find where I said that.

Used/sold them for years. That kind of break isn't what you see happen as many have stated. It was the result of the situation; not the cause. And any aluminum engine part subject to stress loading has a cyclic lifespan no matter what anyone tells you. Rocker arms, rods, etc.

That is why I asked for clarification. Your simple 1 word response to me was unclear weather your opinion of the broken rocker was for this instance or that it was not possible for a rocker to break.

In my opinion if the valve had dropped you would see 10 times more damage.

Maybe I'm not seeing the picture to well but from the picture it looks more like an intake valve/notch on a shallow dome. Check all the other pistons for any witness marks from any other valves that might have left a mark. It helps with a diagnosis of the sequence of events. If the valve had broken the engine would be a bigger mess....

Well it looks like an intake valve to me by the size and how shiny the stem is but could be wrong.
Due to the damage it must have happened at low rpms or that is what I would think.
