4.50 Dragster Tire Shake - Burnout and Launch

Looking for some recommendations regarding tire shake after testing a new setup this past weekend..

245" swing arm dragster, 4.10 gear, 12 degree 632 (steel block, 32* of timing as recommended by Sunset) - never been on the dyno but I would guess in the 1200-1220 hp range, Hoosier D06 tire (around 80-100 passes on them) on a 15" non beadlock rear wheel. We are using a Grid (brand new to us) to control burnout RPM (6600), launch RPM (4400), and launch retard (8* out for .8 seconds).

The tires are shaking in the burnout and really hard at the end of the burnout. Rear tire pressure was at 5.5.

-The first pass we had all the timing in and the car rattled the tires for ~150 feet. Went 1.06 to the 60, then 4.59 @ 153
-Second and third pass we pulled 8* for .8 seconds and the car rattled for ~80-100 ft and went 1.06 then 4.56 @ 154.

Few questions:
1. We are going to switch to 16" rear beadlock wheels, but what tire would you guys recommend for this setup? Would the MT 3190w be good for this setup?
2. During the burnout, the motor sounds very abusive bouncing off the chip at 6600. Are most people with the Grid just setting the RPM high (7000 for example) then controlling the RPM with their foot (around 6600-6800)?
3. What launch retard seems to work well with these combos? We have not done much experimenting but if anyone has something that works well for them, we would appreciate a good starting point.

Any other suggestions or tips would be greatly appreciated, thank you all in advance.

what specific Hoosier.

5.5 psi is low and shorten the burnout.

That said, the emp-tee crowd will be along any moment and tell you to buy bubbas.

I run 6.5psi in my Hoosier 34.5/17 tires, do a short burnout and have no tire shake issues.

we previously had this set of tires and wheels on a hardtail dragster going 4.90s and they seemed to work, we found out very quick they will not work with this new setup

Either of these is the Hoosier tire you need...

18780 17.0/34.5-16 C2055
18790 34.5/17.0-16 C2055

I and many racers with your power run the #18790. The 18780 is the same tire except is 1" narrower section width.

I ran a very similar set up, except I have beadlocks:

6800 Burnout
4500 launch (up to 5500)
5.0 tires
No retard

Car went 1.04 all day, no shake

What does the converter flash to?

Hoosier 34.5X15X16 C-1500 is also a good choice. Works good on mine on motor only around 4.50-4.60 and with the spray at 4.0's.

Though i do not have the power you have, I had the same experience with that same tire. The 3190 took away any shake. Doesn't matter what kind of burnout i do. As a side note, the car would occasionally feel loose on the top end with brand H, have not felt that with the Bubba. Very smooth all the way down the track.

Learn to do a burnout with out using the chip to control rpm. Been told it’s rough on the crank so I learned to not use it. As far as the tire shake put the 3195 Mickey on it and never look back.

It shakes with the 8* out from the instant it leaves till 80-100'? Also, timing full in by .8 which is before the 60' clock yet 330 picked up something doesn't quite add up. Most fast NA dragsters shake .6-.9 into the run (it's common for the driver to think it's further down track because the back tires are shaking and maybe the front tires are past the 60'

632, 12 degree, 15 inch rim, no bead lock, 100 passes on tires.

Get rid of the rim/tire combo. It's just wrong.

Agree with Strange, Beadlocks and Bubbas...the burnouts will smooth out and no chip needed.

Your runs will smooth out as well!

While not exactly apples to apples here on my Altered I tried 3 different Hoosier tires on the car and all were brutal on the burnout. Spin like it was on ice and then instantly hook rattling everything and breaking stuff. My car was breaking engine limiters, brackets, etc. There was no in between they were spinning or dead hooking. Finally I went to the MT 3074 tire and it is so much smoother and easier to drive. Your tires are bigger but I would expect similar improvements in smoother burnout and better ET's with MT tires.

One other interesting thing here in Texas we have track temps up to 150* and the Hoosier tires at that temp would get greasy, slick and sometimes even pull up rubber from the track. No problems at all with MT tires in the heat. The MT tires also work better on those rare times here that it is cold. The Hoosier tires would hook like normal as it got colder then just blow away. The MT tires would stay consistent and hook at temps where the Hoosiers would simply not hook at all.

That is my experience on my car your mileage may vary.
