foot-brake/no-box rules in ref to leaving the starting line.
I would like to hear from promoters, track owners, rules makers about this. A question has come up in ref to what is and is not legal with starting line leave. Stock eliminator racers employ a brake pressure switch and a low limit, adjustable MSD chip for staging, and low rpm leave. Is this legal in brackets?

Is any type of rpm control other than holding with your foot acceptable?

Do rules vary with tracks or promoters?

Depends on the track and the div, north no box class is just that anything except a box is legal, south no box or mod is foot brake most places no trans brake or 2 step.

Ed, looks to be a mechanical throttle holder, is that correct? Who builds that?

Lot of people out this way have something like that--I use a choke cable. Keeps the starting line rpm consistant. Not sure it makes that much difference. Fact is today I think about anything is ok. I was at a track in AL few years back and they pulled my opponet because he had a button on the steering wheel. Also a few years back at Farmington I raced a footbrake car with 4 buttons on the steering wheel, the track operator didn't seem to mind. I footbrake and when the time comes that I need a bunch of electronic enhancements I'll either quit or go back to top. But really no one checks and it seems like no one really cares what you have.

Is a fast idle solonoid legal ? Most are electric, do these work in No E classes ?

I'm not a track owner, promoter or rule maker. In the area around here there are tracks that are no-box and tracks that are pure footbrake. At most the mechanical throttle control like 1320racer showed would be legal. I have seen some people use the old fast idle type solenoids and some tracks allow it, others don't. Either way at footbrake tracks no 2 step launches allowed. At no-box tracks it's all fair as long as there is no box in the car, but that said I have seen cars with boxes in them.
I have used the brake pressure switch with the 2 step launching like a stock eliminator at no-box tracks when I didn't have a transbrake.
All of this is track rules, tracks don't necessarily follow division rules. Also rules can change at a track if there is a different promoter running an event.

"south no box or mod is foot brake most places no trans brake or 2 step."

Actually just the opposite at the southern tracks I race at...no box or mod allows everything but a delay box which is only allowed in box or top...footbrake is a separate class sometimes referred to as street which does not allow delay boxes, two steps, trans brakes or any electronic devices whatsoever...

Solonoids or anything electronic are not allowed for launch rpm or any other reason in footbrake...mechanical devices are ok...

Our track will allow the 2 step on the brake system set up and we are foot brake not no-box

There is is one car that runs with us, when we were still no-box, that is injected. When he would get on the 2 step his car would pop and bang so loud it was distracting the first couple times I ran him so it wasn't the consistent rpm that was his advantage. LOL

Larry, as far as I know the only track in our area that is "true foot brake" is Ardmore. All other tracks run "no box" trans brakes and 2 steps allowed

Last I knew the WFC was pure foot brake. Hope Jared keeps it that way.....But as you can see from above posts rules are all over the place if any.

So Ed do you use that to bring rpm up to launch and then just stab pedal with lights come down another words use it to mechanically raise throttle rpm

Some years ago I spotted one of those manual controllers on a D4 NHRA stocker like pictured on Ed's car. That racer is no longer running a stocker so I reached out to him, and of all things, he still has the controller bought directly from Dan Walleigh. He is sending on loan for experimentation.

This manual SLE has 2 stages.

Stage 1 is use for bump in RPM and is set by pushing and holding the large handle forward.

Stage 2 is stage RPM and is set by squeezing and holding the trigger.

It is my understanding all NHRA Division 4 tracks run "pure footbrake." Abilene runs the same rules as Ardmore.

Electric fast idle solenoids are not legal any where that I know of now in footbrake classes.

You can make or buy a manual fast idle set up.
