The ignition box was used when I purchased it, the seller said it was fresh from MSD. I use a couple of modules to make up for functions that don't work. I have looked around at new products but am still undecided at this time as to what would be the best route to go. Thanks to all of you for your opinions, they are greatly appreciated.

If the 2 step feature has failed in this used red 7230 ignition, you’d be wise to place it in the recycle bin, where it belongs. Put a hammer to it prior so that it won’t be saleable to anyone finding it.

I’m looking at the prior pictures of your car and it has a NO2 bottle. Where’s the ignition retard coming from when activated? If you tell me you have a separate add on ignition retard box for this, I’ll suggest placing it with the old 7al3 if you value your engine.

MANY racers that prefer Analog are using the new MSD 7330 (7al3 black box) that has built in 3 step, adjustable start and four stage retards (NO2), and RPM activated switch (shifting). This ignition is compatible with the 8201 Pro Power coil you presently have. This would be my choice when replacing.

I agree with the black 7AL3, as for the Nitrous it was never used and no longer in the car.

Monte, I have a Grid ignition if you want to try it as well. Let me know, would love to be able to help you in any way I can.

With the 1.37 60ft vs the 6.0 ET there is at least a tenth and a half there. 1.32 is typically a 6.30 player. I think you should be in the 1.30 range with that motor, gear and weight. .07 in the 60 ft is .2 in the eighth in my opinion. The 114 mph looks right for a 5.90 car

The white 70.5 Camero with the smallblock in it weighted in at 2640, 4.56 and a 406 steel headed adn went 1.32, 6.35 @104 with the 496 at 2800 it went 5.80 @ 116 and with the 548 went 5.50 @ 124. the BBC had 4.30 gears and this was all on 14x32 tires.

I do know the 406 went from 6.50 to 6.30's with just a change from gas to alky.

This weekend I want to try and familiarize myself with the grid ignition. I have heard many use this ignition with great results but I know nothing about it yet.

If you have a laptop which you need with Grid, bring it along to the track and have your racing friends install the MSDView4 program and get you acquainted with Digital.

If you don’t attend you can go HERE and get all the information on where to download the MSD View Software and how to use it prior to purchasing Grid ignition.

After reading up on the MSD grid ignition and its almost endless capabilities is it a good fit for my bracket car? The simplicity of the 7Al series and no need of a laptop are a plus to me. I can see where the grid would be a great tool and a big cool factor but I am not sure if it would be for me. But hell, I've been wrong, plenty of times before. Lol

Analog outsells digital. Most that race use Analog. A new 7al3 / 7330 would be an easy upgrade. The Pro Power coil you have is not recommended for Digital. It is an Analog ignition coil.

I am also considering the 7AL2 along with the 3. Simple top bulb bracket car should be fine with either.

Grid has been in the last 6 cars Curt and I have had, I have yanked out 5 7AL3's, and one Holly Dominator ignition system out of cars in the past 4 years. All were replaced with the full Grid ignition.

A buddy of mine just dropped off his 7AL3 for me to try. If all goes well I will make a decision on my next ignition choice. As I learn more about the grid I like it more and more each time. Blah blah blah, sorry about my current indecisiveness. Race on people

Not to throw a wrench in your decision (I went through the same back and forth in this past fall). This winter I went with the Fueltech system, after speaking for a while with Andre instead of using the grid (that I had already purchased cause like I said I went back and forth on decisions) it was decided the 7AL2 I pulled out of the car was going to be best use. This gives me the analog ignition output for simplicity and durability, but the benefits of everything else from a data logging, ignition mapping, system control, and the ability to switch to EFI in the future if I choose. I will never be able to use everything the fueltech is capable of but looking forward to working with it this year.

I got the FT550. I could have utilized the 450 but wanted the extra outputs. We talked about the FT600 but didn't "need" it really.

J.R is correct, the FT700 is going to be a staple piece, and I probably would have gone that route if it came out in 2022 for the added screen size but release was about 7 months to late for me. I will probably upgrade sooner than later to it though once I figure everything out with the current setup.

I have decided on the MSD 7al3 ignition. Early in these post a member said I should replace the 8201 coil with the 8251. Everything I read the 8201 is for short duration (drag race) and the 8251 is for long duration (road racing or street). So what gives is this info correct or not? Thank You
