Cam Follower Solid Lifter Questions
How often do you change out your solid cam lifters that roll on needle bearings (Comp Cams)? One let go about five years ago and ruined the cam. I sent them all out to Comp Cams to replace the needle bearings so they have been in there about five years now. While getting my car ready for this season I checked all the valves and only one that had excessive play about twice the normal gap of 0.018". Is this a sign to replace all of them again? I changed the oil and cut open the oil filter with no noticeable metal particles. Can you buy just the needle bearings from Comp Cams and change them out yourself instead of sending them back to Comp Cams?

Tim

I say yes, time to send them back for a rebuild before another fails. In addition to replaceing the roller needles, they will check the bodies for wear and make sure the form where the wheel goes is not spread.

I don't think you could get them to sell you parts to do it yourself.

I usually go about 600-750 runs but the cams I use are easy on valve train and I have really good control of the valves. If you are seeing .036" lash from a lifter wearing I would get them all out just to be safe.

5 years could be 10 passes or 30000 though so that doesn't really tell how much time they have on them.

Curtis

Five years = about 1,080 passes?

Those were all 1/8 mile passes shifting at 6500 RPM and crossing the finish line at 6500 rpm. The valve lift is only .688 intake and .673 exhaust. I did end up removing the lifters and sure enough it was coming apart because it was rolling slightly rough. Thanks for the input!
