Michael, I’ve always run an electric pump which is the norm with gas and a top of the line pump like MagnaFuel's ProStar500 and Product Engineering's 460 will easily supply the demands of any bracket racing engine on gas. Having said that, there is no performance benefit to running a belt driven pump with a gas engine and one belt to drive off the crank resulting in hp loss.

That said, the Magnafuel pump on my dragster just died last weekend after 9 years in service without issue. It warned me earlier in the day when it started to piss out of the vent hole in the body, indicating that the seal needed to be replaced. Instead I replaced the entire pump/filter combo with a brand new unit

and gave the old pump a proper burial…deposited it in the trash.

FYI, I run the Product Engineering pump in the Firebird...

I've always ran electric like most others, never a problem, definitely the easiest way. I put a belt drive on the truck mainly because we planned on running alcohol as it's easier to turn down the idle fuel pressure. It could be tough to get everything mounted and aligned depending on your current design so keep that in mind and the pump needs to be mounted low.
I actually like the belt drive but if you're strictly gonna run gas I'd probably go electric for the ease ..........

Not really alot of mounting options on our set-up. Just barely squeezed it in there ..........

I'm on alcohol but I really like the belt driven pump. If I ever go back to gas I will stay with belt driven.

I'm on alcohol and personally run a belt pump and have for too many years to remember. A buddy of mine runs gas and also runs a belt driven pump after having a magnafuel fail. With that being said I have yet to see a (APD) belt driven pump fail and its one less draw on your electrical system!

I like the belt drive pump but if I go electric the A2000 would be my first choice and the PE or Magna 500 would be my second choice. I know a person that is running a A2000 boost referenced on a mini blower with 2 1150's and never a fuel supply problem and that is with the pump and tank in the rear.

I agree with you on the pumps. I have had great luck out of them. Question for you. I assume you use their regulators too? Have you had good luck out of those? I have until recently. Now I seem I can't keep a steady fuel pressure. It seems to creep up a lot (bowls blowing over) then you adjust back down then after a while it will drop real low. Put a brand new regulator on and it does the same thing.

I haven't had any issues with either the Magnafuel or PE regulator but keep a brand new spare just in case.

I also run the MagnaFuel PS500. Like Ed I had an issue with the lower seal leaking and locked up a bearing (blew a fuse). Likely my error in leaving it dry over the winter vs. leaving fuel or filling with light oil. MagnaFuel was great to work with. They told me which parts were needed based on serial number and build date and the service parts were readily available at the time. I bought a new one and repaired the old one and keep it my track box as a spare. They used to also cover the labor to rebuild if you didn’t want to repair yourself.

I think it just comes down to personal preference. When we ran alcohol we liked the belt driven pump so much more than the electric pump that when we went to gas we kept the belt driven pump. Never been upset with either one, it’s just a preference at the end of the day

Just switched the truck over to gas for the last few races of the season, gonna be cold. I prefer to store if for the winter on gas too.

Real pain in the ass with a belt drive pump, an electric sure would be easier Big Grin

For the record ........ I still prefer the belt pump.

I have EFI / methanol and a mechanical pump with front tank. I switch from methanol to 93 octane at end of season, run it through the injectors (load a different fuel map) and switch back to methanol at beginning of season.

On one side of the fuel regulator is a 6an male that is capped off because I run my system in series. I remove the cap and install a line long enough to go into a fuel jug. I remove the pump belt from crank and work the pump with a battery drill.

Remove all the methanol out of the tank into the jug with hand drill. Fill tank with 93, replace jug and start pump again by hand and let 1 gallon get into jug (goes in the lawn tractor). Reverse fuel same way at start of season. Takes 20 minutes at most and no mess.

I have an electric pump om my truck and like the fact I can go from alcohol to gas very quickly if I decide too just by pumping out the tank and swapping carbs.
I have a belt drive on my car, but it has a terminator on it.
