Tips !
Back in the BC ages (before Computers) I used to read "Car Craft", "Hot Rodding" and they would from time to time run a Tips section or stories that guys would send in to share. This might be cool to do here.

One that I can think of is for the dragster guys, when filling water in the engine. There always seems to be that air pocket that kicks ones butt. heres what I found to work well and easier than a pressure tester. Pick up one of those long smooth tapered funnels (18" inches or so) Wal-mart has them. Push the funnel into the water neck the tapered funnel will seal very well to the neck. now you will have a water level 12" or more above the highest point within the engine or radiator. keep the funnel full of water while you use the bleeder on the radiator to bleed out all the air.

It works !

Your Turn

1. Grease on a tap will keep shavings from falling into whatever you are tapping..

1a. Use a vacuum cleaner to clean out lifter valley and inside ports after cleaning intake gaskets.

If you need to cap off your tube of silicone after opening it try an electricians wire nut.

Put a smoke alarm in your enclosed trailer with a siren or light outside your trailer that the smoke alarm will trigger so you aren't pulling a blow torch down the highway without knowing it! And don't lock your doors when towing! You may need to get in their quickly and as far as I know there aren't to many thieves that steal stuff "on the run"! Also put a name or number on top of your trailer so it can be spotted from the air should it be stolen. Don't know too many thieves that go up and check the top of the trailer for anything! On your scoop plug drill a couple of 1" holes just through the plastic in front but not through the foam. If you accidentally rev the engine with the plug in place it could prevent sucking the top of the scoop in.

This is more of a reminder...

Always, always, ALWAYS degree in your cam. I didn't, and was wrong when I thought I put it back in straight up. Hung all 8 exhaust valves open just enough to get dinged by the pistons. You can see the mark on the piston at about 2 o'clock.

the containers that the "white creamy" hand cleaner comes in makes a good carb cover for a 4150.

If you do any kind of bodywork or painting, sandpaper is a standard commodity.

#1 Use a file folder to keep your sandpaper in, this will help keep the edges from curling up. You can even use multiple folders to organize the various grits.

#2 Mount a regular hacksaw blade to the front of your workbench with wood screws. Leave it slightly loose and it makes a dandy sandpaper cutter. I have used the same blade for over 20 years now.

If you need to drill a hole in sheet metal use a step drill, it will make a perfectly round hole unlike a drill. Available at electrical supply stores or tool supplies.

For doors cars where it is a pain to get at the tranny lines, Cut the lines were they are easily accessible and install bulk head fittings. You can then unhook the lines at that point instead of at the tranny. Makes it alot easier when you are pulling the trans.

Batterys

Always keep the battery in your race car and your daily drivers or anything "Clean"

Try this, if you've got a vehicle with a dirty greasy case or the same around the termials. take a volt meter and with the black probe to ground (or even to the grn side of the battery) and take the red probe and probe around on the case ...... you'll see direct voltage that is draining to ground. I've seen as much as 5 to 10 volts......

This is something that a truck, motorhome or something that sits alot with out much visual maintance will be prone to. And will not crank after sitting for some time.
This something that is more prone to acid batterys
Just clean the battery and starting problem gone.

Never use rol-loc discs to clean off gasket material unless the piece is off the engine and can be completely cleaned....those fibers will wreak havoc on bearings, enough of 'em can plug an oil pick-up....Jasper states warranty null and void if they find it one of their engines.

Those handheld scotch bright pads will, however, restore the "satiny" look to brushed look fabbed valve covers etc.

An import car air to air intercooler makes a nice, strong, lightweight aluminum radiator for cars that don't need alot of radiator..such as alky motors. I have used one for years, work great.

When packing your parachute use weed wacker string. it slides nice and won't saw on the loop when you pull it through.
