I just rebuilt and installed a powerglide transmission that uses a manual valve body, while I had on jackstands and warming it up I noticed that when I put it in high gear rear wheels come to a complete stop. When I raise rpms wheels move and appear normal,I just don't remember if it acted like this before. During rebuild I did install a new band and adjusting screw. I double checked the adjustment and that seems to be ok. Unfortunately I cannot check line psi because I am using a one piece CSR trans shield that covers the psi checking port in servo cover. Has anyone else experienced this? Thanks in advance for any and all input.

Pat thanks for looking and yes I have already checked and linkage is adjusted correctly. As far as adjustment procedure, I have always torqued adjusting screw to 72inlbs and backed out 4 turns.

Depending on how much power you are making you may want to adjust the amount you back off to 3 or 31/2 turns. Also have seen were when the rebuilder installed the pump back in the trans and nipped one of the seals rings on the pump caused the same thing you are descibing. the pump is trying to send pressure to more than one gear at a time.

3.75-4 turns is fine almost all the time. If one of the rings on the back of the pump were to be nicked you'd either have slippage in high gear or no high gear. It won't affect low or reverse if a ring is hurt. Pop out the cable from the arm at the trans. Run the shifter through the gears and see if the detents match up to those of the trans shift arm as you move it. Some shift arms use multiple holes to accomodate various shifters. Hope this helps...

I would definately recheck the manual valve, I had the same thing happen years ago and the manual valve was off just a hair, (it doesnt take much)putting it in lo and hi at the same time. The way I was told to check it is put it in lo and the manual valve sticking out of the valve body should be .700 from end of valve to the valve body, it worked for me.

After reading this I went and checked mine.Cause I couldnt get all of park.Would have to hold the shifter up sometimes and rock the car.I really hate this cause after I get the car strapped down to the trailer I always put it in neutral to tighten it down. Then back in park.It would almost never go back in because I couldnt rock it.I just feel better towing when I know its in park.Anyway the prevoius owner had the cable in the bottom hole.I moved it to the middle hole.Seemed to work better,I now have all gears on jackstands.I just hope I have all of low when I get to the track.--By the way Transman,What makes my car rock forward when I start it or rev it in neutral?

The input shaft always wants to turn in a Glide if the engine is running. No matter how loose the converter it'll want to spin a bit. Then when you rev it up it spins a bit more. With the design of the Glide planetary the input will make things want to rotate. Very normal situation.

Transman I have done what you described with the linkage and as I said everything checks good. So going by my original post would you say I have a problem?

It's unusual for them to stop like that. What does it do down on the ground; does high gear work? I'll check back in here probably tomorrow mid-day... am headed out now to drive an hour out of town to play in another hockey league game tonight...
