While mixing some fuel for friend since he does not have hydrometer. For hell of it we dropped proofing hydrometer in. A 30% load read 70% meaning 70% alky. We checked cpl more mixtures and it worked out accurate all of them.

Yea I know nitro mixture not normally part of bracket racing deal.Just thought it was cool that it actually read correctly with hydrometer made for proofing liquor.

That’s what we used in the lab to check ethanol.

Hydrometer is a hydrometer is a hydrometer. As long as the fluid density is within the hydrometers range all is well.

Mine I bought 7 or 8 years ago are just standard Hygrometers (Hydrometer?) Hygrometer?) and were about half the price of ones sold for Nitro.
They measure Specific Gravity and I got them from my Dyno guy Joe. He set me up with nice carry case, two of the meters, a beaker and a digital thermometer. Everything you need.

"Dunning-Kruger Effect"
-a type of Cognitive bias where people with little expertise or ability assume they have superior expertise or ability. This overestimation occurs as a result of the fact that they do not have enough knowledge to know they don't have enough knowledge.

Before you argue with someone ask yourself, "Is this person mentally mature enough to grasp the concept of a different perspective?" If not there is no point to argue.

It's a good way to check your methanol.

Yea but proofing hydrometer reads direct percentage no chart required. Now is it dead balls acurate every time remains to be seen. Throw in the cost facture. You can buy 2 or 3 for one nitro specific. Plus with nitro specific ones they have ranges and require multiple adding to cost.

Don't get me wrong. I have full set of hydrometers for nitro and one for alky. For quick between round checks a proofing hydrometer would be way faster if maintaining same blend. Now that said if proofing one continues to read the same I going to be pissed I spent all that money for complete setup.

You do realize a "proofing hydrometer" is for Ethanol Alcohol percentage and not methanol alcohol percentage.

You also have to correct for temperature for each type type of hydrometer.

Dang those kits are expensive. The company I work for sells hydrometers for less than $50 and bi-metal thermometers for $25, I’m not sure what the cylinders cost but probably $20 or so, then $20 for a case from the China tool store although we do sell Pelican cases too.

I undestanf all of that I have been mixing nitro for good while. As I said it reads same as actual hydrometer for nitro and that is after going to chart to get actual reading. On chart you have to go to temp and hydrometer reading to get percentage. The proofing hydrometer read same with no calculations. Now it reads amount of alcohol and that lets you know the nitro percentage. As I stated earlier. I do not know how accurate at all temps. I do know it checked out at 40* , 65* and 71*. Full proof test no, but covers fairly good range. Will be a while before I can check t higher temps

On Curtis point. You can buy hydrometers from FIE at $33 each.I found glass beaker on ebay and already had the electronic thermometer. I used a old plastic tool box and piece of foam. Whole total I have about 140 bucks.Thats for 3 nitro hydrometers and alky and glass beaker. Fie sells them in ranges to give more accurate readings, but cost and require more work to store and not break. It does allow to buy just one or two to meet your needs. Not sure why I have the 70 to 100% one.
