Put one in my new motor. While I like how smooth it turns and how stable the oil pressure is, I was disappointed to find the gear shafts are not extended nor the cover doweled like on the melling select line of pumps.

They do, this is a Melling shark tooth standard volume high pressure billet sbc oil pump.

Medium spring tight clearances 30 wt, the gauge reads 45 psi at idle backing into pit 200 degrees after the run.

Pretty much all I use.

Woodrow Bracket suggested years ago, standard volume sbc oil pumps, I listened.

Couldn't order a select, this has replaced it.

I am going to try the bolt on pickup deal.

I’m using the aluminum std. volume shark tooth. As above no pulsing, really rotated easy, solid pressure. The cover on mine is dowels. So far so good.

I have the 10552ST in both my Dart sbc. I use an ARP pump shaft, not the Melling. This pickup works best for my 8” pan. https://kevkoracing.com/products/pickup-1004-10555

I like that they finally added a bolt-on pickup feature. The shark tooth name is catchy. I wonder why it took 70 years for someone to try using helical cut pump gears? Confused
Seems like it might help move the oil in the right direction, even though it can't go anywhere else.
How does the cost compare to the old standard design Melling pump?
Do they offer it in BBC form?

I figured under $100 bucks, having never looked at the cast pump version. They're approaching $200.

Amazon has the best price $159.

This is definitely not the oil pump ya want sbc, unless you're using plastigauge to check clearances. Or not checking clearances at all. This is a high volume pump, you want a standard volume, high pressure pump.

You got right pump for 8 quarts, my bad.

In melling select line of pumps part #10552 is a plus 10% volume pump not 25% like usual for hv pumps. Doesn’t matter if it’s the st pump or c pump. 10552,10552c and 10552st are all same plus 10% volume.

The downside is the tall gear, which means tall cast housing.

With a cast iron housing in comparison to a billet, the weak link is the pickup falling off.

I've seen some elaborate approaches which added weight out at the end of what is a long housing 10552. The pickup doesn't fall off but the pump breaks in to two pieces, same result.

A 10553 standard volume high pressure is a shorter cast iron housing. I used these when I was on a cast oil pump, for reasons mentioned.

A 10552 shares the same long cast iron housing as a M55HV, I've seen those break in two.

I think you picked a good oil pump. It would be my second choice, If I had a pan holding more than 5 quarts of oil.

I ran the Melling like that. I kept breaking pick up tubes off. I found the billet pump on amazon last year for $199 so I bought 2 of them. Haven't had a problem out of them yet. Knock on wood!!

There’s decades of history of the pickups breaking off, in addition to more recent reports of the casting failing too. That in itself should be enough to convince any serious bracket racer to use a billet pump in their engines.
