We have a 77 Camaro that runs 11.50 with a mild 355 on alcohol, powerglide, 8" converter, 4.46 gear, 29.5x10.5 tire. The 355 has flat top pistons and cast iron world products heads. The cam is a mild roller. We want to build another motor that would put the car in the 10.80 range. I'm wondering what the thought is about a well built 355 vs a 383? Something with with high compression, a good set of aluminum heads in the 210 to 220 cc intake range, 650" roller cam and the correct converter. Can we reach out goal? We worry a 406 might make this car to fast, plus then we need a good block. Thanks!

Car weighs 3450 with driver. It's a back half, four link car. Most of our racing is 1/4 mile.

Stock block, eagle rotating assembly, with JE 13.5:1 pistons, 670 lift cam, Dart 227's untouched, went 9.40's at 2500 lbs, so add the weight and you are looking at 10.10's or 20's? If on gas would be a touch slower, maybe your 10.50 goal, 5500 stall TCI group 4 convertor.

I would not use a factory block, get a little M or motown. I have 3 cracked stock blocks used for a 383 with 6" rods under 600HP. Save the time and $$ go after market.

^^^^^^ Agreed. A Dart SHP would be a wiser starting point imho. What you think you’re saving now will lead to spending 2x or more in the future.

We got about 2000 passes on our 1989 block. Finally cracked it somewhere. Will pull it apart in next few weeks to see where, but mainly to check crank (should be fine) and order an SHP block. It is a 10.80 car we slow down to 11.50. Was not filled, nothing special, from my buddies 1989 Vette. Had made a cheap 383 with it 15 years ago.

Thanks for the info. I did not know there was a problem with the 350 truck blocks. I thought that's why the 383 was so popular, because you can use a stock block.

Old stock blocks, OLD! Not the newer hydrualic roller stuff. The good old 010 blocks would work well for you for quite sometime at that power level.

66 Nova 355cid Dart 220 heads ported with super victor to match. Roller cam 650-650,750 carb. Best ET is 9.72 @ 136 @ 2850lbs. It's really nothing special. Driver does't wan't to get license so we slow it down to 10.0's

73 Camaro weighing in at 2760 going 10.40s at 4800 ft. adjusted with a de-tuned 383 work horse . Consistent as any one could ask for , old seasoned GM block ,aluminum heads, 650 lift cam , power glide and alkyl carb. I am unwilling to go faster than 10.0s

My 3400 lb wagon had a 383 until I split the main cap on 2 different stock blocks. Dart II heads, circle track roller cam, Probe Pistons that might have been 12:1. 750 Rupert. Ran 6.78 best, usually ran 6.90ish. Heavy cars are hard on them main caps when you're a throttle ripper

I know very little about sbc's, but I pay attention lol . I have a friend with a 355 in a 72 nova, I think it weighs 3150 ish. He had stock Track 1 heads on it with a decent roller on gas and ran low 11's with 5.13's and a 30" tire. Car didn't repeat very well either and was very sensitive to weather changes. He changed the heads to an AFR cnc 195 and picked up 1/2 second and over 5 mph with the head swap alone. He now runs 10.90's at 125 in 90 degree heat and is printing tickets, on gas.

I'm assuming your 77 Camaro weighs more than 3150lbs so I'd probably go right to the 383 with a decent head .

Chad, there is no doubt that you continue to put together some very strong sbc packages as you have listed.
Would you share what block manufacture these were installed into ????
