Roger,

It's clear, the resident expert trumps your opinion. Wink

Ankle humper Ed has never laid eyes on his own lifters.

Ed's a crate engine drag racing expert, if you can imagine that.

Lifter failures are so devastating in a race engine.
Having learned my lessons with top shelf Crane and Moral, I used EZX on my 582. At the time it was expensive, but over time they proved to be bullet proof and an excellent value.

Are you saying that you lost a set of Morel lifters? What part number if you don't mind my asking?

A DRR member ask me about this today & here's the answer.

"Black Mamba & Bushing Style Lifter Installation
1. These lifters have a special break-in lube between the axle and the roller wheel.
“DO NOT WASH IN SOLVENT.” Wipe the lifters off with a clean lint-free rag and
install into engine.
2. These lifters need a break-in period with no load on motor for 25-30 minutes,
varying the RPM from 1800-2200 RPM. After break-in re-lash lifters. The lash
should not vary more than .001”.
3. Do not use any oil restrictors.
4. Make sure the lifter to bore clearance on cast iron blocks is .0015”-.0017” and on
aluminum blocks it is .0014”-.0016”. The lifter bore roundness and taper should
be a maximum of .0002”. Following these clearances will give you good oil to the
rocker arms while giving you good performance and durability."

Curtis, Yes and it was two different sets. This was well over 15 years ago and the build book went with the engine I sold. So sorry, I don’t have the morel part number. It was definitely a stock bore, stock height and no off-set needle bearing roller lifter. In hand it looked identical to a Crane Ultra Pro.

I followed all the instructions and they are fine. Mine where installed at .0017" lifter to bore clearance. I have 5 seasons on them.

Over the last four years in my shop i`ve seen two high ends builds come in with bushed Isky red zone lifters that destroyed the camshaft. Something about bushed lifters and massive spring pressures seam to cause a problem. In this type of engine i use only Jesel needle bearing lifters and the biggest diameter i can fit. In basic street and bracket race engines, i use Bam lifters. A very good piece for the money. On builds using hydraulic roller cams, i`ve been using Morels but in my last two builds i had an issue with plungers getting stuck. There always seams to be an issue with hydraulic roller lifters. I know some people will say go to Johnson lifters but i already seen 3 engines in my shop with destroyed cam and roller lifters from Johnson. I`m not saying Johnson is the problem but i cant tell which one failed first.

Some are blasting Morel because they have installation instructions?

Don't they all have instructions?

Besides that what Racer or Man for that matter ever reads instructions or Directions? Hello!

Or Warning labels? I mean if you have to be told not to use a hair dryer in the shower maybe it is best just to leave the warning labels off and let nature take its course. Just saying. Sometimes I think the shallow end of the gene pool could stand to be cleaned up a little. Read a bunch of Warning labels and you will realize there is way too many Stupid people on this Earth.

Back to the instructions. We only read instructions as a last resort and usually if we have to break out instructions we are pissed.

-a type of Cognitive bias where people with little expertise or ability assume they have superior expertise or ability. This overestimation occurs as a result of the fact that they do not have enough knowledge to know they don't have enough knowledge.

Before you argue with someone ask yourself, "Is this person mentally mature enough to grasp the concept of a different perspective?" If not there is no point to argue.

UPDATE: Lifters are doing well, rock solid on the valve lash checks. Been doing plenty of rips on the throttle, playing the game. I've got 3 races under the belt & plenty of testing. The next two weeks brings more testing & 7 races. After that, if I have problems with the lifters. I'll chalk it up to, "Race engines don't break sitting in the garage or trailer." Wink

We have around 50 runs on the non-cookie cutter motor. Everything is checking good, but I'll do my normal lifter replacement at 2 years. I'll inspect them or have them rebuilt & used them for spares. Now if I have problems with them, see last sentence above. Razz

There was really no decision to make, our engine builder wanted to use them based off their experience. They had built a Blown Top Dragster motor with needle bearing lifters per the customer & when he would rip the throttle it would take the bearings out. They switched to these lifters & issue was solved. Yes, I went with them & I've done plenty of ripping so far.

Cool man. Thanks for the answer. I have looked those over and I liked the idea and design. I have run Morel solids for years always with needles though. Have my fifth set and 4 of 5 are still being used. I sold 3 of the sets.

Follow up on the lifters, we have around 200 runs on them & all is well.

The only thing we have broken on this combo is a intake rocker arm body (T&D). They had around 1700 passes on them from the NA combo. All the rockers have been replaced with new.
