Al, thanks but I'm good with the 6061 and if this is an "issue" with the best built dragsters ever made, I'm fine with it as the car's been great without any chassis issues unlike Racetech and American.

Ed,

My post was an FYI only for all.

And, I will let your "Best Built Ever" statement fly, we don't need to go down that road! Big Grin

I know how you feel about Dan Page cars but they are only popular in his backyard and aesthetically I don't like them. Undercover was the benchmark that everyone else tried to copy.

for what it's worth i had cracked my mid-plate on my dragster with i went from a 5.0s chrysler to 4.70's bbc. I made the midplate out of material i had laying around for years. It cracked the first year with the bbc. I attribute the failure from age hardening. Made a plate from new 6061-T6 and no problems since running 4.40 in car a whole lot older than ed's. (i put a second engine limiter and anti-roll on it when i replaced the plate with 6061-T6 fyi)

I think that's the resolution, an engine limiter

The steel mid plate did remedy the cracking issue. Nothing cracked again going back 6 years now, 4 different cars, 2 different brand cars.

I repeat! WE have never broken another mid plate after replacing them with steel mid plates.

What works for us doesn't always work for all others, same goes for Ed's experiences.

I know Bill Frederick and others I have spoken to say do NOT put a steel mid plate in.

Ok, no worries, meanwhile steel worked better for us with recommendations from others to use steel if we chose to. Bill refused to make one, that did not mean we didn't.

Not pickin, just saying steel did work out without engine limiters as well as other brands keep both types of mid plates in stock.

That is the issue that we fixed on my friends car. I made 2 plates for it until we fixed the movement.

steel doesn,t flex like aluminum. flexing and age breaks anything eventually and some amount of flex has to be allowed in any design.

I understand your statement about many in my area having his cars but UC is not the benchmark for sure. This isn't about UC vs DP or anyone else's. As for looks, that's all personnel preferences. UC's aluminum bodies have issues. All the top body panels have that small bend just above the side panels and they are all 90 sharp corners, this is a paint killer, the cowl panel is awful near the windshield area. They had to add this bend to keep the sides straight because they are so long. I don't even want to get into the whole mono shock deal. Don't get me wrong, I am not saying his cars are junk, by no means! Also note Kurt has told past customers to call Dan since he no longer builds them because he builds a great car. Dan builds everything from TAD dragster to Jr's, Promod's to simple back half's. Every NHRA tech inspector that has looked at my car for either tech or a certification all know is work and praise it! Kurt took a long look at my car back in the days of the 5 day at Moroso and said it was very nice. Kurt was the first, at least as far as I know, to hook up with a bank to provide loans for races cars! Probably the smartest thing he ever did.

Back to the mid plates. My friends UC has engine limiters, and he still broke two 6061 AL mid plates to date. Will the 7075 last, we will see. As for steel vs AL, I see no reason why a steel plate can't be used but I see no reason one needs to use a steel plate to start with. There is an issue that needs to be addressed which could be just that 6061 is not strong enough or other. Engine limiters should be incorporated into all cars with the power levels available today.

As far as I know, flex is flex! FYI, when you apply a load to any material, it's moves, compresses, extends, bends, twist or any combo of these depending on the type of load it needs to resist. There is a design issue when a car continues to break mid plates.

Also should be noted when something breaks on a car the amount of passes and ET is more important that "years".

For example, when people say "I've had no problems for years" that could be 100 or 1000 passes.

that was before he went out of business and Bill Frederick went into business continuing to build Undercover cars now known as Elite Chassis.

For what it worth me and Ed have identical Undercover chassis. Mine was brand new on the track in 2014 as a bracket car. The mid plate cracked in 2015, I blamed the crack on the plate being powder coated and tire shake, I was running GY at the time and they would shake when lifting on the burn out. After getting screwed by Miller I made my own from 6061-T6 plate.
In 2018 I converted the car to TD and installed a blown BBC using the same 1/4 inch mid plate. The only limiters the car has ever had are off the back of the trans. Currently have the motor and trans out so I checked the plate with a 100x magnifier light, zero cracks found after 2 years as bracket and 5 seasons in TD with blown alky motor 2000 plus HP
