ebay has on the off brand made in china crap. Floods of it... but they also have select used good stuff.

If you have the funding, you could buy new.

do you have a name brand in mind?

I was trying to stay away from the cheap import ones and was hoping someone had already purchased one they could recommend.

First choice is Sunnen..Second would be Japanese..Last would be Chinese. I personally use a Sunnen and its fixture in the machine shop its not cheap but its used almost everyday.

srd.. Would you still recommend the admitted best for a hobby user?

If the best was needed Starrett is the best made in American tool.

But they cost like 5x of a decent made in Japan tool.
When a question like the OP is asked I always consider cost and purpose, just like when I bought the Pea**** I have new in 1992. It makes no sense to buy the best when the use is now and then unless your a dripping in $$$$. The other end is the crap from china can result in a bad eng build so they are consider unusable.

Speaking of DB G's. Been looking for a small bore on for lifters and balancers and now have it. It's another Japan brand that sounds like and looks like Pea**** but is Teclock. .7 to 1.4"

Has a small but usable .001 Standard (American) gauge.

I wanted to measure my 565 lifter bore but it's back together so it will have to wait.

The market is flooded with good deals if you take the time to look.

Agreed. Your looking at 2K for the Bore gauge and setting fixture.

We use all Sunnen bore gauges and we have the setting fixtures to go with them,

The cheaper gauges with the ridgid fingers are alright for measuring round bores but when measuring housing bores with bearing in them and bearings have eccentricity they do not work as well, The Sunnen gauges have flaoting fingers and wok much better measuring with bearings in the housing bores.

I have proved this more then once to other engine builders with there cheaper gauges.

So would you say the do it yourself people should opt for something else? I use a Starrett mic, and a Mitutoyo dial bore guage. I can't afford a Sunnen with the setting fixtures just to put an engine together every couple of years.

all this DG talk got me motivated enough to find the missing 0.8" Anvil from my Mitutoyo 511. I had got a 2nd E 0.7 by accident and never sent it back. I emailed Long Island Indicators and they are going to swap it out for the cost of shipping Darn nice of them
