Machining starter mounting block?

My starter is not engaging into the starter ring gear deep enough. My question is how do you know how much to machine the starter mounting block? For example if you machine the block .020 does that move the starter in to the ring gear.020… Thanks

I can't answer the question directly but you could put a .030" or whatever sized shim in. Measure with gage pin. Remove the shim and measure again. That would give you a way to tell the amount of movement.

Generally, machine .030 off will engage the starter drive .015 deeper into the flywheel

If I have to machine the block I cut more off than needed and spacer it back to spec needed .

I just did this . my clearance was over .060 and ended up taking .050 off to get around .035

You're going to machine the engine block to get starter drive tooth depth? Eek

Wow, I'd start with a flexplate of known quality, a starter drive and starter end housing of known quality, and do a lot of other things before I'd machine an engine block.
Are you using correct starter bolts? I'm assuming this is a typical Chevrolet?
Couldn't you machine the starter housing end easier than the block?
Does this starter work on another engine?

Maybe I don't understand the whole picture?
