alternator drive at pinion
I am curious if anyone employees an alternator, mounted on 3rd member housing, driven by a belt off the pinion flange. I know it is done on some circle track setups, just curious if anyone does so in a drag race package.

Well if you were only interested in charging the battery a few seconds every round...

Not good for us. Stock cars are always moving

just curious. I expect it would not charge enough to be of benefit.

Opposite of what we want. We want max power going down the track and charging when warming up, staging or driving to the lanes. I think some have used a full throttle switch that turned off alternator when wide open to get a few extra ponies but still charges all other times when motor is running.

"Dunning-Kruger Effect"
-a type of Cognitive bias where people with little expertise or ability assume they have superior expertise or ability. This overestimation occurs as a result of the fact that they do not have enough knowledge to know they don't have enough knowledge.

Before you argue with someone ask yourself, "Is this person mentally mature enough to grasp the concept of a different perspective?" If not there is no point to argue.

Question on alternator and know answer will vary depending upon few things.

What rpm would it take for alternator generate at least half its capability?

Mine won't put out any significant charge until about 4500 rpm.

I use one of the super mini 55amp units but it is a 2 wire not 1 wire. I have a 5.125" lower pulley and the 2.5" alternator pulley. On my data recorder it is putting out 13.5 volts at idle and all the way down track. It has never put out much more than 13.7 volts but I have never had to charge the battery even making 13 passes one day. Of course I only have a SBC with 13-1 compression on alcohol. I'm sure if it were a 632 with 16-1 on gas running the fan all the time it might be different. I don't have a way to see amp output. I need to do that I guess.

We bought an ex-NMCA S-10 that has a pulley on the pinion flange, previous owner said he ran it that way until the "rules" said you cannot do it so is has to have some advantage I guess?
