I think I am going to look for a rust-free C10 pickup with a carburetor and HEI distributor and just sit back and watch the "fun" begin.

Would you be interested in a like-new Quadrajet carb., complete with vacuum choke pull-off.? JK

I know around here having solar panels on your roof is about a $15k to $20k reduction in re-sale price due to all the extra maintenance cost (new roof every 10 - 15 years MAX, along with the regular "solar check ups", etc), kind of like having a pool.

And for the BIG Elephant in the room, what do you do for all those renters that happen to be foolish enough to buy an EV (renters are the majority of people that live in cities)? Who's going to pay for those installs?
Me being a landlord can tell you right now that I won't be.

Also, what about these same renters that don't have garages? I can see the neighborhood kids disconnecting the car in the middle of the night or better yet while the renter is at work someone just pulls up and plugs THEIR car in.

And as was mentioned these batteries do NOT last when sitting outside in the cold.
It was 6 degrees here this morning, warmed up to 18 during the day, I wonder how much battery life that cold temperature will kill.

NO WAY can these cars be charged in less than 6 hours and as was said, who in their right mind will be "swapping out" batteries, not too mention how many days it will take to do it.

Way too many things need to be worked out.

I wanna see AAA jump start a Tesla.
Why isn’t the roof/hood/trunk of these cars solar panels??

What happens when the supply of lithium runs out?
I feel if EV's are here to stay they will have to come up with a more viable power/energy source.

There will be huge GAINS in battery design but it will be a while. Meanwhile the first EV cars will end up in a "special junkyard" where we will not have a system to really clean them up for years and years.
NEVER will gasoline and diesel powered cars and trucks be replaced for decades and decades. Commercial equipment and farming equipment will continue to require fossil fuels, people who have to travel 400-500 miles a day and make a living will be using gasoline and diesel for years and years.
Electric vehicles have a certain spot they make sense but it will be metro areas and non-commercial uses. It will be a "feel good thing to own".

Another one of those moments in technology. We don't need any truck drivers More jobs lost.

More complex, more room for "ERRORS" and people will die.

Car Disruption That Nobody’s Talking About

Across the country, thousands of companies such as Trenton Forging are warily eyeing a future of electric vehicles that contain a fraction of the parts of their gasoline-powered counterparts and require less servicing and no fossil fuels or corn-based ethanol. It’s a transition that will be felt well beyond Detroit, as millions of workers at repair shops, gas stations, oil fields and farms find their jobs affected by an economic dislocation of historic proportions.

Auto Industry Employment
Making, selling and servicing vehicles employs an estimated 4.7 million people in the U.S.

The last time I was in Sam's they had a driver-less floor cleaner. AI marches on. Don't worry about job loss, government guaranteed minimum income to the rescue. See there, there's always a silver lining you just have to look for it.

This is too funny not to share

Such a sad story when reality sets in!
Brad lives in California..... He was sick of the world, of Covid-19, Trump, Russian belligerence, China, global warming, racial tensions, and the rest of the disturbing stories that occupy media headlines. Brad drove his car into his garage and then sealed every doorway and window as best he could. He got back into his car and wound down all the windows, selected his favorite radio station, started the car, and revved it to a slow idle. Two days later, a worried neighbor peered through his garage window and saw him in the car. She notified the emergency services and they broke in, pulling Brad from the car.
A little sip of water and, surprisingly, he was in perfect condition, but his Tesla had a dead battery. Brad is a registered California Democrat.

No one expects these rules to be implemented in the original time limits. The passage of laws is simply the starting gun for the lawsuits to begin. The private sector will explain in court over the next decade why the original deadlines cannot be met.

Solving The Ozone Problem Caused By Electric Cars
By News Staff | April 18th 2011 02:01 PM | Print | E-mail

News Staff

Ozone is a known pollutant at low levels in the earth’s atmosphere, which causes harmful effects on the respiratory system and sensitive plants. Ozone forms as hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides emitted into the air react with sunlight. Two of the largest emitters of these pollutants are vehicles and electricity generating units (EGUs) but as Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) have risen in popularity over the past decade the positive impact on the environment due to lack of fossil fuel exhaust fumes is offset by increased ozone.

When PHEVs run off battery power they emit no pollutants from their exhaust but the EGU’s which provide electricity to charge batteries do give off pollutants. New research in Environmental Research Letters shows that charging at night will lead to lower levels of pollution on average. The work used four U.S. cities and four representative modeling days.

There has been a great deal of debate regarding the best way to charge electric cars. The first scenario in this study was based on charging the car at off-peak times in the night. The second scenario involved charging to maximize battery life (charging just before use and only the amount of charge needed to complete the trip) and the third scenario involved charging the battery when it was a convenient time for the driver (typically just after vehicle use).

The results of the study showed that the overall levels of pollution resulting from EGU emissions associated with charging were lower than the level of pollution resulting from the emissions associated with 20% of gasoline vehicle miles traveled (VMT).

Although night time charging was shown to yield the highest amount of nitrogen oxides, this led to the least amount of ozone on average across all cities and hours modeled as there is no sunlight for the emissions to react with. By the time morning comes, the pollutants are dispersed and diluted by other processes such as the wind.

Lead author Dr Tammy Thompson of MIT said, “The results in general show positive air quality results due to the use of PHEVs regardless of charging scenario with the nighttime charging scenario showing the best results on average by a small margin.

“This further supports efforts to develop regulation to encourage nighttime charging; an example would be variable electricity pricing. As more of the fleet switches over to PHEVs and a larger demand is placed on the electricity grid, it will become more important that we design and implement policy that will encourage charging behaviors that are positive for both air quality and grid reliability.”

Talking with a friend yesterday, new EV require an 80 amp circuit. So what happens when your wife or kid/ kids have them too? Two or more 80 amp circuit’s? What grid will handle this? How about a fleet of EV’s?
I’m sure you could charge it with your 120/20 amp service if you have time……
I’ve been looking for a Chevy Volt. The Hybrid still pencils out.

I see 10 years from now, the next hurricane Rita rolls into Houston (anyone remember 2005?), and an entire city rolls up I45 in their EV's. In 2005 every gas station ran out of fuel, 1000's of vehicles were stranded on the side of the interstate. We are going to need a lot more infrastructure to support 10,000 EV's leaving their home charging stations.

Without data, you’re just another guy with an opinion.

Someone will figure it out be part of the solution not part of the problem.

The difference between ignorance and stupidity. Ignorance is lack of knowledge. Stupidity is the inability to learn. Don't be stupid

You are being led around by your nose on this one. There is no net environmental advantage to EV's. It's simply shifting pollution from one place to another. And money from one pocket to another.

I dare say he fancies his nose ring. The smugness and ignorance (he'll know what that is via his signature) of his post is telling. Like any good lib "someone will figure it out", won't be him!
