^^^^^^^^^^^ What he said to some extent. The people in certain industries that are in a world of hurt probably didn't have the good fortune most of us have had. Case in point, a young man I know was working as a server and studying for his masters degree. While he can continue his studies and is, his job as a server disappeared over night. The restaurant closed for good, krappy management didn't have a contingency plan. Dumping everyone in the same boat is shortsighted and realistic. BTW, I spotted him a few $$$$ to keep him going, and he gets to cut my grass every week.

studying for a master's degree is admirable but means he's already amongst the privileged. Now I don't want to go back and forth on where I stand but suffice it to say, I'm a conservative Republican and generally speaking I don't believe in handouts of any kind, we are owed NOTHING from our government or in life, no one deserves anything. You either figure that out in life early on or you don't, I did. I've been working since I'm 13.

My son and daughter both are in college and both lost their jobs in a restaurant. They both were able to find other jobs.

Not saying everyone can do that, but if you have enough ambition and drive it is possible, even in these times.

That being said the numbers at my shop are off 70% because of this virus crap. I did not lay anybody off but I did apply for the PPP loan /grant. To me that was a no-brainer if it's there I'll take advantage of it plus it'll definitely help my employees.

Krappy management? What contingency plan? MANY businesses don't have months of excess capital to stay open during a crisis. And while I bent over backwards and kept all of my employees employed when we went through slow times, I don't think that is a requirement for businesses. Is that somehow owed to employees?

they are employees, not partners. They work you pay them, don't work they don't get paid.

Not any more---looks like they make more money than employers pay by staying home. No work big pay, go to work and get less!!!!

Well, you hit it on the head. Those employees don't take the risk involved with owning a business. If the business goes under, they get another job. The bank may take the business owner's house. The owner has a lot more to lose. Everyone forgets that, particularly when a business owner is successful.

if your employees forget that, remind them and if they still don't get it, you hired the wrong people, either be the boss and fire them or fire yourself!

I'm fortunate that my company is guaranteeing hourly employees 40 hours no matter what. I'm salary now, and working from home, full pay. My biggest issue is right now finding stuff to do. Not really very much I can do from home for my job, so we are taking online training classes that are offered through work. We are working on updates to materials and such, but most of that is being done by other people in the org, we are just providing input and tech experience.

As to food and supplies, I generally buy in bulk anyway because I hate going to the store and getting stuck behind people that like to block the lanes and take their time...drives me crazy!!! So for food and whatnot, I'm good for quite a while...TP too, got enough to get me to the end of the year easily if not longer, and I didn't hoard!!! Hell, I haven't even bought TP in over two months... I don't have two freezers full, but my pantry is full and there is enough in my freezer to feed me for at least another month before I even need to consider a store run....

I gotta agree that if people just think a bit ahead on a normal day to day basis, this wouldn't be that big of a deal.....

I agree to some extent with bailouts but when the government shut you down for the safety of the public, the government should have some obligation to the you.

We invest money in our employees. Just to let them go would be crazy. In our industry you do not see many under the age of 50.

We pay a lot in taxes and if the government wants to give us some of that back to keep our employees we have no problem taking it.

I think some of you missed my point. BTW, I ran my own business for 30+ years and always had a contingency plan, both for myself and the business
s. Bucky, your point is well taken, but you know as well as I do that most employers don't plan past the end of their noses. While I don't think anyone is happy with the current situation I do feel we are facing a culling of the herd. Under Trump, this not a slam on him or his presidency there were/are a lot of business' that were doing what they thought was great but had no plan when the schitt hit the fan. Well guess what, the fan is running on high and the schitt is plentiful. My point was that this young man had a plan, was working his plan to his end goal. His ego took a hit when without notice the restaurant just closed the doors. As far as Ed's comments of him being privileged don't hold water. He has put himself through undergraduate school, paying his own way all along. These are the young people we need to encourage and support. Also, he is president of the campus Republicans and more conservative than me.

was specific to the fact that he has both the $ and time to study for his masters which yes, does make him privileged.

for the record, I put myself through undergraduate school too, started 40 years ago, when not everyone went to college and I was not privileged to be able to study for a master's degree, I had neither the $ or the time working full time.

That said, if it was my call he gets no hand out. Life isn't fair, suck it up, learn from it and move on.

Look up the word privileged. To say he is among the privileged because he has worked his arse of the get where he is just a arrogant statement.

you didn't and just because you don't agree with my position doesn't make it arrogant. 8% in this country have a master's degree. That makes him privileged if he gets it and of course he has to work for it. No one yet is handing those out.

and not the Firebird too? Razz

Sure he's privileged as are all these kids that raced in juniors and then made the transition to a full size dragster. He's a great, smart, young man that I am proud to call my son. Graduated from Penn Sate last year with a 3.8 GPA and now is working full time in NYC. He's met or exceed every expectation we set forth for him and he's a conservative Republican too. Wink

No drugs, tats, piercings, etc. Knows he's male and is happy he is.

I hope to be just like him when I grow up. Big Grin
