Has anyone bought and used any of the many different brands of the cooling vests available? I'm looking at several different brands that have removable ice packs that you keep in the freezer. Seems like they would work well in weather like we are having now. Put it on when you go to staging and take it off when you get back to your pit. I don't think it would be a problem fitting one under your firesuit.

Simpson. They work great. Thin under a 20 suit. We bought extra packs to keep in the cooler between rounds.

Bender, I'm looking at several as well. Can't deal with the heat myself. I'll post the links to the ones I'm looking at in the morning.

Michigan...57 degrees this morning! Love summer racing up north, real feel was 97 at midnight at home in Texas last night!

The cool suits (cant remember brand name) we had in the past were nasty after little use and just was not worth the hassle for me...drink plenty of water either way!!

Here's some of the ones I'm looking at. For me, I'll trend more towards the ones that maintain a lower temp, because I prefer the cooler temps. But anything is better than the heat right now!!! They do have the cooling shirts that circulate coolant, but they are expensive, you need a place to put the chiller/pump, and just aren't practical for what we do.

I bought one and have used it at the past few races. It keeps my core area cooler, but my head and crotch/leg are is still hot as ever. I sandwich it between 2 ice packs (in a cooler) between rounds and it recharges it.

I also tried laying an ice pack in my helmet between rounds but that fogged up my face shield. It felt great when you first put your helmet on, but didn't last very long.

The ice vest does work. It helps with the cooling it provides. I will continue to use it for sure. It hung over my shoulders and fit fine under my fire suit and belts. It didn't interfere with my simpson hybrid neck restraint at all

This is the vest I bought:

I've got to do something because I don't deal well with the heat and humidity. Take away the humidity and I'd do better, but both combined kicks my butt....If I was 20-30 years younger it wouldn't matter as much, but now, it could be the difference between leaving the track on my own or being carried out in an ambulance.....

Mark,
That's exactly why I did it also.

I thought about buying 2 vests (as they are pretty cheap) and a small chest freezer to keep one in.I have the generator on the whole time for trailer ac. They would get a better recharge left longer in the freezer.

Anyhow, I feel the ice vest was a great investment.

The ice packs work fine, but you really need to put them on dry ice to make them really effective, and that stuff isn't always easy to find and you do need to be very careful with it.

I use cooling vests that the motorcross racers kinda brought to the market. They are gel-filled, throw them in ice water, take one out and wring out all the extra water, put in on under you fire jacket, and zip yourself up. You feel like you are inside a refrigerator! It does get messy with the water, but they work great!

I keep three of them and rotate throughout the day. People look at me with the fire jacket on and zipped-up and shorts on, like what the heck is with this guy. Put your hand inside my jacket and you'll know why I keep it closed! I think they are about $25 or $30 each. I put a damp towel on the back of my neck that was sitting in the same ice water on the nasty days.

I have one and I do not even use it. Not worth the trouble for as little as it does. Now I usually have small towel that I keep wet around my neck.

Hey Brian, although I use a coolvest in my car and recommend it I have this vest that I would ship to you to use if you're interested. You would just have to buy the frozen packs to put in the pockets. I have about 30 or so of the packs that I put in the cooler for my coolvest.

This is what I use. A little tough to configure in a dragster I suppose.

Wife keeps a wet towel in heavy duty baggie in RV freezer. I stuff it down my shirt when heading to staging. Makes a big difference while in staging in sunlight on hot days.

I ended up getting one from www.stacoolvest.com because they are local and I was able to try one on before purchasing.

I used it last weekend at the PDRA race at SGMP. It was mid 90's and of course very humid. The vest made a HUGE difference in my comfort level. Was I still hot? Yes of course, but I was able to sit in the car with my suit and helmet on without feeling like I was about to die! After getting back from a run, I took the vest off and the skin on my chest and back was very cool to the touch. I would highly recommend this vest or similar to any of you that suffer from the heat.

Money well spent.

How have those ice packs worked out? I imagine you have to keep from having belts cinched down on them?
