Terry Haddock got hosed out of $7000 on that one. The starter sees whats happning and gives them to thumbs up and sends them. Then NHRA DQs the run

Starter won't learn procedure if racers are scapegoated, and made to pay for miscues.

Haddock knew he was right. The more he realized he was right! The angrier he got.

Right don't carry the clout it used to, hopefully this trend will change, before societal collapse.

I'm gonna go the other way here. If the rules clearly say two latches required, what happens when the #17 qualifier finds out he was bumped by an illegal car?

It is the responsibility of EVERY racer to maintain, inspect, and prepare your car properly and stage a legal car.

I think there's still a few in NHRA that remember the stunt they pulled, dropping the cow pies on the starting line, way back there, when they had that Firebird body painted like a cow.
That did not go over well.....

You have to put in the effort, to get anything out of it.

Would the starter have let him leave if both latches were broken? I think not. If it's such a safety concern, then they shouldn't have allowed him to make a pass. Especially with the cost per round of these monsters. It cost him a lot more than $6,500.00.

You are correct, I kept thinking about that, and realized I had them confused.

That's the gist of Haddock's complaint though...the NHRA starter KNEW about the latch, and told him he was good to go instead of shutting him off before the run. Haddock not only lost out on the first round money, but he also lost whatever it cost to make a run that was eventually thrown out, even though the official indicated it was okay.

I'm far from the anti-NHRA type, but that was a bull**** move on the starter's part.

"Dunning-Kruger Effect"
-a type of Cognitive bias where people with little expertise or ability assume they have superior expertise or ability. This overestimation occurs as a result of the fact that they do not have enough knowledge to know they don't have enough knowledge.

Before you argue with someone ask yourself, "Is this person mentally mature enough to grasp the concept of a different perspective?" If not there is no point to argue.

I get it, I can see both points of view. I'm wondering if the starter decided to overlook it and someone higher up the chain said "what was all that about" and then overruled the starter. We'll never know.

Ultimately, none of it would have went down if Haddock had brought a properly maintained/legal car to the starting line. He's really got no one to blame but himself and his team, IMHO.

This, if it was so unsafe the starter should have shut him off right then and there. But in my opinion when he gave him thumbs up and ready to go that should have been end of it. He may have said make sure it is fixed before next round or shut him off but to disqualify them after the fact simply is not right.

But, if Haddock is to be believed (and I have no reason not to believe him), the latch broke when they went to put the body down. Now, you could say that it's something that "should" have been caught, but **** sometimes breaks with no notice. Especially on a fuel car. Throttle cables, wing struts, hell, entire chassis' have broken with no advance warning.
