I'm thinking of buying some parts from a private individual who is a fair distance away and he is asking if I have PayPal. I remember reading about some scams with PayPal. Is anybody using PayPal to buy parts form private individuals and if not what are you using?

I still use Paypal to buy and sell. I haven't had a bad experience yet though. I think it's worse for the seller since they buyer can file a claim that the parts were never received and get their money back.

I sold a couple toilet systems last month sent one to Australia and one to Arizona. I guess there is never a foolproof way when dealing with people a long way off.

Quit PP years ago. Sold a trans for $2200, I could only get a portion of that money per month, took three months to get all my money plus their fees on top of that, never again!

I would suggest downloading and using the app called Zelle. It is 100% safe and is even being used by all Huntington banks for money transfers. It is free to use and the money is directly deposited into the other users account. No waiting period for the money to clear like if you were using paypal.

A Walmart to Walmart cash transfers is a pretty good deal other than you both need to go into a Walmart. I believe there is a max amount you can transfer but not sure what it is. Buyer pays the fees too which is great for the seller.
I sold a 3rd member this way, I sat in the parking lot while he sent the money on his end, he texted me the tracking info, I walked in, showed my ID and walked out with cash in hand

That doesn't offer the buyer any protection does it? What if the seller doesn't ship the part? I've always used paypal for years never had an issue. Bought and sold hundreds of parts

PayPal is fine if you know the person you are dealing with. I use it a lot when collecting from my customers and I also recently used it to send a deposit to a guy I was buying a racecar from.

Again, great when you know the person on the other end. I would not be very comfortable using it with anyone I didnt know.

Someone else mentioned Zelle . . . I would also recommend this. I've used it a lot to collect from customers too and never had an issue.

My bank account was hacked thru PayPal...

I can only assume I inadvertently responded to a fake e-mail and the hackers used that to transfer money from my bank thru PayPal as an instant transfer.....4 separate transactions that added up to $5000 !

Luckily I got on it within a day or two and got the money returned.

I immediately called my bank and they put a stop to any PayPal activity...TD Bank did a great job on my behalf in this matter.

I had ZERO luck getting any help or response or even speaking to anyone from PayPal...

They ended up crediting my bank account 2 times and I owed them the same amount that was originally transferred.

Then they called me directly and numerous times once I owed them $$.

They wanted the $ back but I refused to allow them any direct transfer from my bank..

I paid them via CC if I recall right and my PayPal account has not been active since...

That was 2 years ago and the account is basically useless...and they do not respond to any emails or messages I send asking them to just cancel it all. Just like before they are impossible to deal with if you don't owe them $$...

I used them for many transactions in the past but no more....

I have asked for a check or a postal money order when I've sold parts via RacingJunk....and have never had a bad transaction either buying or selling....

I've sold parts locally thru various sites.

PayPal S-U-C-KS...

I do like using Postal money orders also but so many guys don't want to spend a few minutes to go get one. They just want to Paypal.

Had one guy wanted to use some Facebook money transfer deal they have and go upset because I wouldn't do that. LOL

postal money orders do work great. Especially if the guy getting money understands its mail fraud if you get cheated. How much to want to go to jail for it?

The other party may ask the buyer to pay by using "friends of family gift". In doing that, paypal does not offer any protection against fraud. Thus as a buyer mostly, I will not (ever) use gift unless I know the person personally (friend or family)-and even then I question it. Normally the seller pays a fee which comes off the top, so if you sold a transmission for $2000 and used paypal, you will get 3% less than $2000 whatever that is (too lazy to do the math, sorry). Some sellers don't like it apparently. But if you look at the other way, as a seller if the package is damaged or lost during shipping, paypal will help you. If you're the buyer and the package is lost stolen or damaged, paypal can help you. If you used gift or friends/family in either case, you're just out of luck. Yes I've had sellers ONLY want to use gift, but I ain't going for it. All it takes is once. Passed up some good deals, but I'm glad I did.

I set up a Zelle account and when one of my renters tried it to pay me it would only let him send $300 a day. Went to the bank to see why and it was no help. Send a couple of USPS money orders, they work so far.

When working at the race car shop, we got fake postal money orders, fake personal checks and fake cashiers checks when sending items COD. We stopped COD orders.

The only way to protect yourself as a seller thru PayPal is to ONLY ship to the verified address and get a signature upon delivery. Even if the person disputes the charges for lost or stolen items, you will not lose your money, it takes awhile but you still get it once you prove it was sent per PayPals guidelines.

At my present job, we have had 2 customers re-route packages then claim they did not receive them, cost us over $10k in losses. We now have all our deliveries blocked so they can not be re-routed by the customer and we require signatures. It is a pain in the ass for our customers but it is the only way to protect the company. We ship items from $10, up to $100k on a daily basis.

Now Paypal.....I had the 'the part ain't what you said it was' claim....buyer got his money back and kept my part....Paypal said 'too bad. Pay us our fees.'

I said.....cancel my account please....
