I saw that and was not impressed. They are are wanting to make it like Street racing yet be polite and politically correct. What ever, same as the street racing deal. Like back when there were drivers that had real personalities. The 32 and 64 car Funny Car shows and match races that drew standing room only crowds at every event. People cheering on their favorite drivers and backup girls. You would be hard pressed today to even find 32 running Funny cars, let alone 64 of them to gather for one show. They might not have been as fast as they are today but as far as putting on a show...they were much better at it than what we have today. John Force is one of the few leftovers from that era. Where do you think he learned how to be a showman at....Hint...It wasn't racing NHRA events. | |||

Actually a lot of it was pretty silly stuff if you go back and listen to the radio ads or read the flyers. It was pro wrestling type ads. Now they are trying to do it with the national events. Must be working as the stands were packed in FL. | |||

Sorry Fern , BUT, the first US Nationals was in Great Bend Kansas in 1955. Next year was Oklahoma City, followed by Detroit for two years then to Indy in 1959. My grandfather flat towed his 49Ford from Indy to Great Bend and raced most of the US Nationals for over 30 years until his passing. Don't ya just love a trivia addict. | |||

This article really explains how Garlits found a way to get Wally Parks to increase payouts at National Events. Big Daddy's race in Tulsa opposite the US Nationals in 1972 paid $25K to win in Top Fuel, Funny Car and Pro Stock.
