Grocery Taxes
A plan to eliminate the grocery tax in our State has been turned down by our Senate. Guess they don't have to buy groceries. With record high inflation, as seen by all, those in states that have a grocery tax are experiencing a rise in their taxes from this angle. Maybe the State coffers do not want to see the reduction in available money for them to spend, reduced. All while on the backs of the "working class and under privileged". Just saying.

When I lived in MD there was no taxon groceries. Here in NC it seems to differ from county, 6 to 7.5%

Maryland is 6% on the purchase of goods and services, 9% on alcohol.

Even if you buy online from out of state, you are taxed.

quote:
Maryland sales and Use Tax.

Every time you purchase taxable tangible goods from businesses outside of Maryland, whether in person, over the phone, or on the Internet, the purchase is subject to Maryland's 6 percent use tax or 9 percent alcoholic beverage tax if you use the merchandise in Maryland. Maryland's use tax protects Maryland businesses from unfair competition. Local businesses would be at a competitive disadvantage if consumers were entitled to a 6 or 9 percent discount on items purchased from out of state businesses.

Special rates and situations
An 11.5 percent tax is imposed on short-term passenger car and recreational vehicle rentals. Certain short-term truck rentals are subject to an 8 percent tax.

The 6 percent tax rate is applied to a portion of the sale of new mobile homes and modular buildings, as well as a portion of the gross receipts from vending machine sales.

The 9 percent tax rate is applied to sales of alcoholic beverages. Reference the Alcoholic Beverage Tax Rate Chart-9% for details.

In Illinois, the grocery tax is being briefly suspended.
But it doesn't apply to all items that I consider groceries.
Kind of another scam.

They're going to get their money one way or another - sales tax, income tax, property tax, whatever. Taking the taxes off groceries just means more taxes somewhere else.

I do not think States cutting their taxes and income is the answer for a Federal Problem CREATED by current administration. In fact if all States did it I think Federal Government would just take the opportunity to do us harder and deeper.

The problem is we have a Federal Government Spending problem and their solution of spending more money is not a Solution.

While I am a huge proponent of less taxes you can’t just jump up and eliminate a resource without a plan.

I’m for less spending and then less taxes. Both sides need to learn that.

It wpould just means they have to steal money somewhere else.

Lots of luck get any tax canceled. Kind of like school tax. Why should I have to pay for others kids? I did not get the fun that got them here why penalize me?

OK here is another MD tax tid bit. Personal property tax-NONE, vehicle inspection-NONE unless you sell it and no emissions on diesels. Here the personal property tax on our, when new, 2017 Honda the first year was around $500+ and last year at 4 years old was around $350. Our 22 year old car was still PP taxed $48. $31 each year for inspection. Now how about that?

Taxing groceries may be the only fair tax. We all eat. I think that there should be a National Sales tax and do away with any type of income tax. That way everyone pays.
