Fort Hood Victims a Step Closer to Purple Hearts

The victims of the 2009 Fort Hood shooting may eventually receive Purple Hearts after a controversial five-year fight, now that a new agreement has passed through the House and is on its way to the Senate.

Thirteen people were killed, including a pregnant soldier, and 32 others were shot in the November 2009 rampage perpetrated by Army Maj. Nidal Hasan. At his trial, Hasan argued he was acting “in defense of others,” in particular, the Taliban in Afghanistan. Prior to the attack, Hasan had also been in communication with Anwar al-Awlaki, a U.S.-born radical al Qaeda cleric hiding in Yemen.

As an ABC News investigation in February 2013 revealed, the survivors of the attack said President Obama and the military had neglected them – and denied them financial benefits – by refusing to call the assault an international terrorist attack.

Hagel Warns Major Changes Coming to Pay and Benefits

Outgoing Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel warned of major changes coming to pay and benefits in the military while stating that those currently serving would likely be "grandfathered" against cuts.

Compensation will be as big an issue in coming budget debates with Congress "over the next year as there is, and it should be, because when you are talking about that entire compensation package for all of you and your families, I mean that is key," Hagel said Wednesday on a visit to the new amphibious assault ship USS America.

The debate will be shaped by the Feb. 1 report of the Military Compensation and Retirement Modernization Commission, which was created by Congress in 2013 to recommend possible changes to military pay, benefits, health care and retirement.

In remarks first reported by Military Times, Hagel said in response to a sailor’s question that "I think this year will be the beginning with those commission recommendations of where we start moving forward on making some of these calls."

However, Hagel also spoke to grandfathering those currently serving against major changes, especially on the retirement package.
"This country cannot afford you all"

VA secretary asks Iraq War veteran: 'What have you done?'

Coffman, an Army veteran, did not respond at the hearing. But the four-term lawmaker said in a statement later that he could tell McDonald a few things he hasn't done.

"I have never run a federal agency that tolerates corruption the way the VA has. I've never built a hospital that's years behind schedule and hundreds of millions over budget. And I've never been a shill for inept bureaucrats who allowed American heroes to die on a medical waiting list," he said.

The last comment was a reference to a wait-time scandal that cost former VA Secretary Eric Shinseki his job.

"I've run a large company, sir.
What have you done?"

VA Secretary Robert McDonald admits lying about Special Forces service

Veterans Affairs Secretary Robert McDonald has admitted that he lied about serving in the special operations forces in a conversation with a homeless veteran that was caught on camera earlier this year.

McDonald made the claim in January while he was in Los Angeles as part of the VA's effort to locate and house homeless veterans. During the tour, a homeless man told McDonald that he had served in the special operations forces.

"Special forces? What years?" McDonald responded. "I was in special forces." The exchange was broadcast on "The CBS Evening News" Jan. 30. McDonald's misstatement was first reported by The Huffington Post.

McDonald graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1975 and completed Army Ranger training before being assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division until his retirement in 1980. According to the Huffington Post, while McDonald was formally recognized as a graduate of Ranger School, he never actually served in a Ranger battalion or other special operations unit.
"As I thought about it later, I knew that this was wrong,"

Army Announces Force Structure,

DoD News, Defense Media Activity

WASHINGTON, July 9, 2015 – Army officials today announced force structure decisions and stationing plans for the reduction of the regular Army from 490,000 to 450,000 soldiers.

The reduction of force structure will occur in fiscal years 2016 and 2017. The end-strength reduction of 40,000 will be completed by the end of fiscal year 2018, and will be accompanied by the reduction of 17,000 Army civilian employees, officials said, adding that the cuts will affect nearly every Army installation in the United States and overseas.

As part of these reductions, the number of regular Army brigade combat teams, the basic deployable units of maneuver in the Army, will continue to decline from a wartime high of 45 to 30 by the end of fiscal year 2017.

The Army will convert the 3rd Infantry Division’s 3rd Brigade Combat Team at Fort Benning, Georgia, and the 25th Infantry Division’s 4th Airborne Brigade Combat Team at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska, into smaller units -- maneuver battalion task forces -- by the end of fiscal 2017.

Brigade combat teams consist of about 4,000 soldiers; the battalion task forces will have about 1,050 soldiers.
